    Rosacea Awareness Month

In honor of April being Rosacea Awareness Month, we wanted to explain what rosacea is, what can trigger it, and some treatment options to help keep rosacea at bay!

    What is Rosacea?

Millions of Americans suffer from rosacea, which is a skin condition that can cause redness, visible blood vessels in your face, and small, red, pus-filled bumps. It is often confused with acne because of how it sometimes looks. There isn’t a known cause of rosacea, but both hereditary and environmental factors can cause it.

Have you wondered if you are suffering from rosacea? If you have light skin, have experienced sun damage, are over 30, or have a family history of rosacea, you’re more likely to develop symptoms.

What are some common rosacea triggers?

As we’ve said, the exact cause of rosacea isn’t known, but there are some common triggers for rosacea.

    • Emotional triggers like stress or anxiety
    • Increased sun exposure
    • Some foods and drinks like hot sauce, coffee, or hot tea
    • Extreme temperature from hot showers, hot tubes, or higher temperatures outside
    • Vigorous exercise

What are some treatments for rosacea?

From a dermatology standpoint, we recommend Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to help treat rosacea. This photofacial treatment uses light energy to target the redness in your skin that comes with rosacea. In addition to the redness from rosacea, IPL also helps to treat dark spots and facial veins. Multiple sessions of IPL can help you get results in reducing your rosacea.

In addition to IPL, there are some things you can do at home to help keep your rosacea at bay.

    • Wear a fragrance-free lotion sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. We recommend Elta MD SPF or Revision SPF.
    • Add activities like yoga and meditation to your day to help you destress.
    • Make sure your showers are warm, not scalding hot.
    • Add Revision Vitamin K serum to your skincare routine. This lightweight, oil-free serum works to calm your skin and reduce redness. Plus, for the month of April, it’s 20% off!
